Cover Cop Fiber Optic Security System Deployed by U.S. Military
The U.S. Military is deploying a unique underground fiber optic security system developed by Fiber Instrument Sales, Inc. (FIS). The company's patented Cover Cop security system ensures that only authorized personnel have access to vital communications equipment and cabling that runs through underground communications corridors.
Manholes, handholes, and other access points are protected by Cover Cop fiber optic sensors, which signal audible and visible alerts in the event that a utility cover is opened by unauthorized personnel. At the facility's security office, the exact location of the open cover is displayed on a monitor screen as a flashing icon that appears over a map of the underground facility.
Unlike most other security systems, Cover Cop fiber optic sensors use light (photons) instead of electricity (electrons) to signal an alert. This makes the security system more secure under a variety of threat scenarios.
For example, even if the fiber optic cable that connects the fiber optic sensors is cut or broken, the security system would still function by alerting security personnel of the break and its exact location.
Disadvantages of Security Cameras
Surveillance cameras are often used to monitor power stations and other public utilities. However, a problem with security cameras is that they can be rendered useless when visibility is obstructed by darkness or inclement weather. Cover Cop fiber optic sensors provide around-the-clock protection under all environmental conditions.
Fire Sensor Protection
An added benefit of using Cover Cop's non-electric fiber optic technology is that these fiber optic sensors cannot spark an explosion in underground utilities where volatile gases may be present.
The Cover Cop security system is a spin-off of the company's patented Fiber Fence(r) Perimeter Monitoring System. Like Cover Cop, the FIS Fiber Fence fiber optic security system has been purchased by the U.S. Military. Fiber Fence security systems are used to monitor aboveground facilities.
According to FIS President Frank Giotto, "It is startling to realize how much of our nation's vital communications infrastructure is accessible to anyone via unsecured entranceways. The U.S. Military is among the first to recognize this threat and has been proactive in seeking solutions. Hopefully, their deployment of our fiber optic Cover Cop security system will encourage other entities, including public utilities, to adopt similar security measures."
