Why Were Bobtails Invented?

Our customers asked if we could provide them with a connector that could combine the termination speed of a quick termination style connector with the secure hold of an epoxy-style connector. Since no such connector existed, FIS challenged its R &D team team to invent it.

Our engineers exceeded all expectations! The revolutionary Bobtail connector is quick to install, provides high pull strength, and is less expensive than other quick termination style connectors.

Needless to say, Bobtails generated a lot of excitement when they were "unleashed" into the marketplace just a few years ago. Since then, demand for Bobtails has grown dramatically, as more and more installers discover this unsurpassed termination solution.

Bobtail - How to Terminate in 3 Easy Steps

bobtail_cleave1.jpg

Strip and cleave the field fiber (1 Min.)

Insert the field fiber (30 Sec.) Slowly insert the fiber into the back of the Bobtail until you feel it butt up against the internal stub fiber.

Apply epoxy (30 Sec.) Apply adhesive, completing filling the epoxy slot on the back of the Bobtail Connector.

The adhesive on its own will cure in 5—10 minutes. For a 30 second cure, spray the adhesive with one blast of the accelerant.

Bobtail Options

Bobtail Holding Fixture

To further increase your termination speed, a Bobtail Holding Fixture is available.

Pocket Fault Locator

The Bobtails have a translucent plastic section that enables you to optimize your connection. Using a Pocket Fault Locator, you can view light through the translucent plastic. Once the field fiber meets the connector's internal fiber, the light will no longer be visible. This indicates that your connection is optimized.
LYNX Cleaver

When using Bobtail's, multimode fiber can be cleaved using any good field cleaver. Singlemode fiber should be cleaved with a precision cleaver. The affordable LYNX Precision Cleaver is ideal for both singlemode and multimode fiber.
