Fusion splices typically have a tensile strength of 0.5 and 1.5 lbs.  Although this is adequate strength for normal handling, it is not sufficient for your installed fiber that may be subject to additional pulling or bending forces. Fusion splice protection sleeves provide the additional protection you require.
