FIS Cheetah Splice-On Connector Tip & Tricks
ALL
• Note that there is some play in the fit of the holder, this allows for minor adjustments when fiber load or fiber feed errors occur.
• When splicing LC SOCs the dust cap must be removed. First, insert the ferrule end of the connector first firmly into the holder, then press the fiber end into the holder.
• Due to "fiber curl," the fiber coming out of the SOC may be shifted to one side. In such cases, gently bend the fiber in the opposite direction of the curl, without touching the cleaved end of the fiber. The Fiber Alignment Tool included with each six pack can be also used to aid in the alignment of the fiber into the Vâ€Groove.
• Fiber Curl is Severe †Depending on connector type , rotate the connector inside the holder 90 degrees until the fiber curl is facing down. This should work for all connectors except LC.
FIS CA3 †metal holder is strongly recommended (F1â€SOCMTLâ€FIS)
AFL 11S †it is recommended to use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€AR)
• LC will fit entirely in oven. If unit will not splice an SOC try fiber to fiber first. Sometimes the machine just needs to do a fiber to fiberbefore it will splice an SOC.
AFL 18S/19S/12S †must use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€A)
• Use extended dust cap to hold down switch under Right side oven clamp
• Due to the keyways protruding up beneath the fiber holder, FC connectors cannot be spliced on this unit.
• To assist in fiber positioning problems due to fiber curl, release the right side vâ€groove clamp from the hood tohold fiber in place during hood closure.
• New Metal holder allows the use of ST SOC with the 18S
AFL 60S/70S †must use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€A)
• Use extended dust cap to hold down switch under Right side oven clamp
• New Metal holder allows the use of ST SOC with the 60S
• To assist in fiber positioning problems due to fiber curl, release the right side vâ€groove clamp from the hood to hold fiber in place during hood closure.
**60S comes with standard tight buffer sheath clamps, if the customer is working with tight buffer fiber they will
need to purchase part # So14549 Tight Buffer Holders. If the customer is working with loose tube fiber they will need to purchase part # So14750 900um loose tube sheath clamps which allow 8â€16mm cleave ****See SOC accessory Kits****
AFL 60R/70R †must use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€AR)
• Use extended dust cap to hold down switch under right side oven clamp.
• Due to the keyways protruding up beneath the fiber holder, ST and FC connectors cannot be spliced on this.
• To assist in fiber positioning problems due to fiber curl, release the right side vâ€groove clamp from the hood to hold fiber in place during hood closure.
AFL 17S †must use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€AR)
• Due to the keyways protruding up beneath the fiber holder, ST and FC connectors cannot be spliced on this.
Sumitomo Type25 †It is recommended to use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTL-S)
LC will fit entirely in oven.
Sumitom Type 39 †must use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€S)
• Turn off the arc pause to splice correctly
• Turn off tension test in order not to damage completed splice
Sumitomo Type 66 †must use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€S)
To assist in fiber positioning problems due to fiber curl, release the vâ€groove clamps from the hood to hold fiber in place during hood closure.
Fitel S122 †metal holder is strongly recommended (F1â€SOCMTLâ€F)
SC & LC will fit entirely in oven
Fitel S123, S153, S178 †metal holder is strongly recommended (F1â€SOCMTL-F)
SC & LC will fit entirely in the oven on the splicer
Inno IFS 10 †must use the metal holder (F1â€SOCMTLâ€IFS10)
Inno IFS 15 - uses the AFL F1-SOCMTLA
Connector Specific
• ST †The donut that has been added to the ST to fill the gap between the boot and body varies in thickness. The user can experience difficulty removing the connector from the holder. The user can remedy this by using a spare holder. The connector is spliced then the entire holder is removed from the machine and placed in the splice over. Once the sleeve is cooled the connector can be removed with less chance of breaking the splice. Additional holder can be placed in the splicer and user can work while the sleeve is shrunk.
• ST †The fiber curl is very strong and having issues aligning the fiber. Depending on how severe the fiber curl is, the connector should be placed in the holder with the curl down. If the user experiences a tight fit with the larger donut the connector can be put half way in the holder. At this point the fiber curl will be greatly reduced and the connector can be more easily removed from the holder using the ferrule extension.
